Frequently asked questions
General
A Himalayan yak cheese chew is a natural, long-lasting dog treat made from dried yak and cow milk, lime juice, and a pinch of salt — a recipe originating from Nepal. They are high in protein, low in fat, highly digestible, and considered a safe alternative to rawhide. The cheese is hardened into a stick shape that dogs can chew for hours or even weeks depending on the dog's size and chewing habits.
Yes — Just Cheese Chews are made from only 2 natural ingredients: Cow milk and lime juice. No additives, preservatives, or artificial ingredients. They are highly digestible, most lactose is removed during processing, and they support dental health by reducing tartar and plaque.
The one safety note specific to yak chews: when the chew wears down to a small stub, don't throw it away — microwave it for 90 seconds and it will puff up into a crunchy treat your dog can safely finish.
The length of time a dog Yak cheese chew lasts can vary depending on the size and thickness of the chew, as well as the dog's chewing habits. Always buy the right size for your dog.
Smaller, thinner chews may be consumed more quickly, while larger, thicker chews may last longer. On average, a Yak cheese chew could last anywhere from several hours to several weeks for a dog. It also depends on the dog's size and if they are a heavy chewer or not.
If the dog can break chunks from the cheese chew, it means that the size is too small for the dog or the cheese chew is not prepared properly.
We have created the "good," "better," and "best" categories based on the consistency of these chews after importing and selling thousands of them. We drop test samples from our shipments, 24-36 inches, onto a wooden floor to simulate your dog dropping the chew from their mouth onto your floor. This is more relevant with the larger chews and dog breeds.
Some of the "good" chews are just as strong and hard as the better or best chews, but the chances of them breaking in the "good" category are much larger than in the "best" category.
Nearly every packager in the US sells Himalayan cheese chew in the "good" category. Hardly anyone imports the "better", manufactured cheese chews, let alone imports the "Best" cheese chew from Europe.
It is generally safe to give Himalayan Yak cheese chews, also known as Chhurpi, to a young puppy, as long as it is done in moderation and the puppy does not have any known allergies or sensitivities to the ingredients. However, it's important to keep in mind that puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, and their diet should be carefully tailored to support their growth and development.
Puppies have a higher need for protein, fat, and certain minerals and vitamins to support their growth and development. Chhurpi is high in protein, which can benefit a growing puppy. However, it is important to consult a veterinarian or a professional nutritionist to ensure that the puppy's diet is balanced and complete.
It's also important to check the ingredients of the cheese chew that you're giving to your puppy to ensure that it does not contain any harmful ingredients such as artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives (Ours do not). Some products may also be flavored with ingredients such as garlic, onion, or other substances that may be toxic to dogs and should be avoided.
It is also important to remember that puppies are more likely to chew on things and may choke on small pieces of food, so it's important to supervise the puppy while they are chewing.
In conclusion, while it may be safe to give Himalayan Yak cheese chews to a young puppy, it's important to consult with a veterinarian or professional nutritionist to ensure that the puppy's diet is balanced and complete and to supervise the puppy while they are eating.
Yes — and this is rare. Just Cheese Chews offers our flavored chews (strawberry, blueberry, beetroot, flaxseed, cinnamon apple, turmeric and pumpkin) in the same full range of sizes as our regular unflavored chews, subject to availability.
Most competitors only offer flavored yak chews in a single size or two at most, which means small dogs and giant breeds are often left out. At Just Cheese Chews, every dog gets to enjoy the flavored experience — not just medium-sized dogs.
Most retailers in the US only carry "Good" grade Himalayan yak chews — the most common grade imported.
Just Cheese Chews also carries "Better" and "Best" grades, which are manufactured to a higher consistency standard in a human grade dairy facility.
We drop-test samples from every shipment — dropping chews 24–36 inches onto a wooden floor to simulate real-world use. Some "Good" chews are just as hard as "Better" or "Best," but the likelihood of breaking is significantly higher in the "Good" category.
Our "best" grade is made with a vacuum process which significantly reduced the chances of breaking. They are also molded in a very consistent shape and length. They will will look unique from the chews that you are used to.
Use this guide to find the right size for your dog:
When in doubt, go bigger. It is always safe to size up — a larger chew just means it lasts longer. However, a chew that is too small for your dog is a problem — they can snap chunks off, which shortens the chew's life and can become a choking hazard.
The most important rule: if your dog can break pieces off the chew, size up immediately.
For aggressive chewers we always recommend going one size larger than the weight chart suggests.
1. We grade our chews — and most competitors don't. Nearly every retailer in the US sells only the most common "Good" grade of Himalayan yak chew. We import and offer "Good," "Better," and "Best" grades. We drop-test samples from every shipment — dropping chews 24–36 inches onto a hardwood floor to simulate real-world use. The "Best" grade is sourced from a human-grade processing facility in Europe and is one of the hardest to find in the US market.
2. Flavored chews in every size. Most competitors offer flavored yak chews in only one size. Our strawberry, blueberry, and pumpkin flavored chews are available in all five sizes — from Tiny (under 15 lbs) to XL/Mega (over 80 lbs). Every dog deserves the flavored experience.
3. Just two clean ingredients. Cow milk and lime juice. Most others say they have Yak milk, but typically that is only as small percentage
4. Better process, better flavor. Our chews are air dried — not smoked — which preserves a cleaner, more natural cheese flavor your dog will love.
Chhurpi (pronounced "chur-pee") is the traditional name for the hard dried cheese that Himalayan yak cheese chews are made from. It has been made for centuries by yak herdsmen living and working in the high-altitude regions of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan.
Originally made as a high-protein food source for the herdsmen themselves — who needed sustenance during long, grueling days in the Himalayas — Chhurpi is made by boiling yak and cow milk, separating the solids, pressing them into a firm block, and then slow-drying the cheese for weeks or even months. The result is an extremely hard, dense cheese that can be chewed slowly over a long period of time.
Traditional Chhurpi was so hard that Himalayan herdsmen would keep a piece in their cheek for hours, slowly softening it with saliva while they worked.
When Western pet owners discovered that dogs went crazy for it, Chhurpi crossed over into the pet market — and the Himalayan yak cheese dog chew was born.
Today, Just Cheese Chews sources Chhurpi made using this same traditional, but improved process, with the same simple ingredients: cow milk and lime juice, — now produced in facilities that meet modern food safety standards.
Our "Better" and "Best" grade chews are manufactured in human-grade processing facilities in Germany and Belgium — and yaks don't live in Europe. But there's more to the story than geography.
The truth about yak milk in the industry: yaks are a disappearing animal, even in Nepal. The vast majority of "Himalayan yak cheese chews" sold in the US contain only a very small trace amount of yak milk — far less than the branding implies. Many products lean heavily on the "yak" marketing while the chew is predominantly cow milk anyway.
Our "Better" and "Best" chews are made purely from high-quality European or Nepali cow milk — processed in a human-grade facility to a higher and more consistent standard than most yak-blend chews on the market.
We believe an honest, high-quality chew made from premium cow milk beats a chew with a tiny trace of yak milk made in a lower-grade facility every time. You're not missing the yak milk — you're getting something better.
Our "Good" grade chews do contain a blend of yak and cow milk, sourced traditionally from Nepal, for customers who prefer the traditional recipe.
Yes — and most competitors don't. The majority of Himalayan yak chew sellers label their products with vague size names like "Small," "Medium," or "Large" with no indication of actual weight. You have no idea how much cheese you're getting until it arrives.
At Just Cheese Chews we label every chew with its actual weight range, so you know exactly what you're buying:
We use weight ranges rather than a single fixed weight because these are a natural product — slight variations in size and density are normal and expected. But you'll always know the range before you buy.
